Sunrise and Prince Leopold Island This early morning between 4:00 to 5:00 I wandered around the ship. On the port side the sunrise was just beginning to shine through the clouds. I returned to our room just before 5:00 am and found the photo I wanted on our balcony on the starboard side. Much of our voyage is along the path of the doomed Franklin Expedition of 1845. The expedition, led by Captain Sir John Franklin, hoped to find and map a sea route through the unnavigated parts of the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic. The expedition consisted of two Royal Navy vessels: HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. There were 129 crew members and sufficient food and supplies for three years. Sea Ice looking east to Greenland We're deep into the sea ice. Last night it sounded like the ship was having quite a fight plowing, ramming, and chopping its way north. Our HX ship is rated for 1.3 m/4.26 feet of first-year ice. It has been an amazing experience and this morning we are still northbound in the Nares Strait. We saw Canada this morning. At the narrowest point in the Nares Strait, the distance between Ellesmere Island and Greenland is 48 k/30 miles. View of Elle
