Cambridge Bay/Iqaluktuuttiaq, Canada: August 29, 2026
Sedna at the Red Fish Art Center Sedna is a legend from Inuit mythology shared across the Arctic regions of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. The Legend of Sedna: Sedna was a young mortal woman who refused marriage proposals and was eventually tricked into marrying a spirit disguised as a bird. After her father tried to rescue her, a fierce storm threatened them. Her father threw her out of the boat. As she clung to the side, he cut off her fingers, which transformed into seals,

Gjoa Haven/Uqsuqtuuq: August 27, 2026
Gjoa Haven (pronounced Joe Haven) is a hamlet of about 1,500 people, mostly Inuit, in Nunavut. It is the only settlement on King William Island. Explorer Roald Amundsen spent two winters (1903-1904) here during his Northwest Passage expedition. Amundsen's ship was named Gjoa. He said that Gjoa Haven was the prettiest natural harbor he had ever seen. The Hamlet Office has a bronze bust of Amundsen. Home to the Nattlik (people of the place where there is seal) Inuit, the commun

Bellot Strait, Canada: August 26, 2026
Bellot Strait is 25 km/15.5 mi long and 2 km/1.2 mi wide at its narrowest point. It will take about 1.5 hours to pass through. The most northerly point of continental North America is in this passage (71°58’N 94°57’W). The tide through the passage is tricky and while in the past several ships tried it, it wasn’t until 1937 that the Aklavik, a Hudson's Bay Company boat, successfully sailed through the passage. Hudson's Bay Company had a trading post at the eastern entrance of

Prince Leopold Island and Fury Beach: August 24 - 25, 2026
Sunrise and Prince Leopold Island This early morning between 4:00 to 5:00 I wandered around the ship. On the port side the sunrise was just beginning to shine through the clouds. I returned to our room just before 5:00 am and found the photo I wanted on our balcony on the starboard side. Most of the image is blue but an orange band of the sunrise was visible behind Prince Leopold Island. Sunrise, port side A little later in the morning, the ship stationed itself quite near P

The Case of the Most Curious Canadian Polar Bear: August 22 - 23, 2026
Much of our voyage is along the path of the doomed Franklin Expedition of 1845. The expedition, led by Captain Sir John Franklin, hoped to find and map a sea route through the unnavigated parts of the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic. The expedition consisted of two Royal Navy vessels: HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. There were 129 crew members and sufficient food and supplies for three years. The Captain Franklin chose the protected harbor of Beechey Island for his first

Calgary, Alberta, Canada: July 5 - 8, 2026
"Heartbeat of the City" It was an easy drive from Lake Louise Village to Calgary. We drove south down 1A the Bow River Parkway stopping at several viewpoints along the way. Our first stop was not a viewpoint but a bear. I saw him/her up ahead and we were the first car to stop. The bear was eating the fluffy seed heads of dandelions along the side of the road. He/she paid us no mind as we took photos. The bear is a black bear even though its coat was a lovely shade of golden

Crowfoot Mountain at Bow Lake Viewpoint Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) is a 232 km (144 mile) scenic mountain road that connects Lake Louise in Banff National Park to the Jasper townsite. When the drive begins a road sign alerts you that next gas is 85 km away. The Bow Glacier at Crowfoot Mountain We didn't stop at every viewpoint on the way to Jasper. We saw some on the way north and some others a few days later on the way south as we drove to Calgary. We saw the Big Horn S

Lake Louise, Canada: June 29 - July 2, 2026
At around 7:00 in the evening, I had my first sight of Lake Louise. The color was stunning and the landscape dreamy. The haze turned out to be smoke that had drifted into Alberta from a wildfire in Saskatchewan. The lake retained this soft veil until July 1. The smokey haze didn't bother me, and it didn't seem to bother the masses of visitors who arrived each day to take photos of themselves, and in at least one case of her dog, with the magnificent background of Lake Louise.

Banff, Canada: June 26 - July 2, 2026
Mt Rundle and Vermilion Lakes Dan took me to Alberta, Canada, for our 37th anniversary and my July birthday. We visited Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper National Parks with no admission charge due to the Canada Strong Pass giving free admission from June 19 to September 7, 2026. The scenery throughout our entire journey was magnificent, and my posts of our time in Alberta, Canada, are mostly photos. Banff was cool with very changeable weather during our stay. The clouds were be
